Reframing Migration Narratives Toolkit

1. Introduction

These guidelines provide practical support to progressive campaigners wishing to use a reframing approach in communicating on migration to the public. They draw on a significant body of campaigning practice and literature from many disciplines to provide an accessible set of insights to answer 3 key questions in putting together a campaign based on reframing techniques:

  • Who to talk to?
  • What to say?
  • How to approach and engage the audience?

We are assuming that the target audiences have an established thoughts on the advocacy and campaigning, but need to understand better what is meant by a reframing approach and how might they put it into existing advocacy/engagement approaches.

The elements covered in the gudielines are as follows:

  • What is the challenge – the need to do something different?
  • Frames and reframing  - the main lessons from multiple disciples and practice
  • Who to talk to
  • What to say
  • How to approach and engage them
