Reframing Migration Narratives Toolkit

About The Toolkit

The ICPA Reframing Migration Narratives Toolkit aims to support progressive spokespeople, advocates, researchers and campaigners who need strategic communication and reframing to have a better chance to turn up the volume of an emotionally smart, inclusion-driven narratives in the public debate on migration in these populist times.

Driven by this aim, we have developed the toolkit around the following principles:

  • Build it around a set of elements that support advocates to engage in reframing approaches for public engagement around the migration debate;
  • Provide an accessible, pedagogical tool that directly supports advocacy planning and practice;
  • Build a platform to which we can continue to add content, i.e. learning, cases and insight from practice.

In terms of the design and focus of the specific toolkit elements, our objectives are to:

  • Convince spokespeople/campaigners/advocates of the benefits of adding framing understanding and reframing practice to their current set of advocacy tools;
  • Draw out key reframing principles from literature and advocacy practice;
  • Illustrate these lessons through the case work;
  • Build the guidelines around a practical advocacy planning process;
  • Make it as accessible as possible both in terms of the language/concepts and also by having multiple points of entry to the toolkit;
  • Support the toolkit from multiple fields of thinking, study and practice;
  • And ultimately empower advocates to embrace this newer advocacy approach.

This toolkit was developed in 2016 &17 with the support of the OSIFE.
